Details Hornsby-Akroyd engine and later developments in the heavy oil engine FB2
The Hornsby-Akroyd oil engine, named after its inventor Herbert Akroyd Stuart and the manufacturer Richard Hornsby & Sons, was the first successful design of an internal combustion engine using heavy oil as a fuel. It was the first to use a separate vapourising combustion chamber and is the forerunner of all hot-bulb engines, which are considered predecessors of the similar Diesel engine.

The Hornsby-Akroyd engine and later developments in the heavy oil engine Author: Thomas Hornbuckle. This month's article is about a historically important antique gas engine that is little known in America - the Hornsby-Akroyd vaporizing oil engine.
It uses heavy oil fuels and was significant in the development of today's Diesel, but has lots of peculiarities of its own. Richard Hornsby & Sons was an engine and machinery manufacturer in Grantham, Lincolnshire, England from until The company was a pioneer in the manufacture of the oil engine developed by Herbert Akroyd Stuart, which was marketed under the Hornsby-Akroyd name.
The company developed an early track system for vehicles, selling the patent to Holt & Co. (predecessor Industry: Agricultural engineering. The use of oil as a means of producing motive power was not a new idea at the time the Hornsby-Akroyd engine was developed. The concept was documented as early as by Street, but it was not until that Julis Hock built a workable petroleum engine.
Hock's was a non-compression engine, similar to that of Lenoir. How to Rebuild a Farmall Engine: Step-By-Step Instructions for an H, M,and More - Duration: Dan Gingell and Rachel Gingell Recommended for you Additional Physical Format: Online version: Collacott, Ralph A.

Lockwood . The Hornsby-Akroyd was an instant success, and a total of engines of the type were built. Its uses were numerous, and it was produced in both horizontal and vertical form, stationary and portable. In Ruston, Burton and Proctor changed its name to Ruston, Proctor and Co Ltd and by the year they too had produced their first commercial. This 35 HP Hornsby-Akroyd is a hot bulb vaporizing oil engine built on Englishman Herbert Akroyd Stuart’s design.
It uses a vaporizer that is heated by an external torch until it is almost a dull, glowing color, and the heavy oil is injected into the hot vaporizer on the intake stroke. The heavy duty oil engine of to-day retains to a certain extent the advantage of Brayton's constant pressure engine, in as much as the heavy oil fuel is slow burning compared with petrol.
The advent of Dugald Clark's 2-stroke cycle engine, and of Charles Ackroyd Stuart's Surface Ignition engine. Manufactured under the Hornsby-Akroyd name, an oil engine for use in a military tractor earned Stuart a prize of £ from the British War Office in Strand magazine was to describe it in as 'the first definite proposal for a fighting machine on the lines of the existing tank'.

Investigations by Graham Sanson found that the engine was a Hornsby-Akroyd vaporizing oil engine designed to run on kerosene and rated at 6HP. It had been shipped to the Australian agents, H.V. McKay, on 8 November with a purchase price of £ Graham Sanson was able to purchase a set of manuals for the engine.
The Development of Steam. People had experimented with steam-powered engines in the seventeenth century as a solution to power problems, and in Thomas Savery invented his ‘Machine for Raising Water by Fire’.Used in Cornish tin mines, this pumped water with a simple up and down motion that had only limited use and couldn’t be applied to machinery.

Break-In-Oils – As one engine builder told me, you need to seat the rings immediately and completely to maximize the engine’s ultimate power potential, whether it is a racing engine or a street engine.
We developed break-in oils to protect high performance valve trains, yet allow more accelerated ring and cylinder wear during break-in.detail later in this module. Another difference between a gasoline engine and a diesel engine is the manner in which engine speed is controlled.
In any engine, speed (or power) is a direct function of the amount of fuel burned in the cylinders. Gasoline engines are self-speed-limiting, due to the method the engine.R was one of a pair of British rigid airships completed in as part of a British government programme to develop civil airships capable of service on long-distance routes within the British was designed and built by an Air Ministry–appointed team and was effectively in competition with the government-funded but privately designed and built R
